The heart of the Mars Surface Rover activity is found in the leadership roles. These roles were specifically designed to demonstrate the typical leadership approaches. The specific behaviors were derived from the six sets of skills, including Communication, Thinking, Administration, Influence, Interpersonal and Change Management.

Change Management
The willingness to take risks and buck the tide is an important leader characteristic (Likert & Araki, 1986). Sponsoring innovation and creativity to meet changing customer and company needs are part of risk-taking. Changing course to take advantage of opportunities may sometimes cause opposition (Bell & Zemke, 1989). Effective leaders are able to cope with uncertainty when taking risks. The activity is designed with initial obstacles and with an unexpected change in costs.

The unique value of this program is that, through gameplay, participants are provided a safe environment to either demonstrate these skills or fail to demonstrate them, which then creates a natural learning opportunity.
